Analysis and evaluation methods for automatic, continuous flap operation and simulation (INTELWI-TUB)

Within the cooperative project INTELWI (Intelligent Wing Design and Verification), an "intelligent wing" for future commercial aircraft is being investigated, which reacts automatically to external influences such as manoeuvres and gusts with load reduction. Such an "intelligent" wing is a consequent next step in the development of future commercial aircraft. It should make a significant contribution to ensuring the future competitiveness of Airbus as an aircraft manufacturer. The project is based on several existing research results on the sensor, control and actuator technology for wings and brings them together in an overall design.

The project INTELWI-TUB (Analysis and Evaluation Methods for Automatic Continuous Flap Driving and Simulation) at the Technical University of Berlin contributes to the development of more powerful and efficient aircraft in cooperation with the industrial partner's Airbus and Liebherr. At the TU Berlin, a function for an automatic, continuously moving slat/flap system (ACMSFS) for an intelligent wing is being developed so that the aircraft can be operated at its current optimum point with minimum aerodynamic drag during flight phases close to the airport. Flying at the optimum point leads to a reduction in emissions and fuel. The developed ACMSFS function is evaluated in flight simulator studies using criteria for flight performance, flight characteristics, economy and eco-efficiency. The existing design and evaluation methods will be extended and refined in the course of the studies, validated using current and future operational flight procedures and optimised by pilot comments. The studies enable the rapid development and evaluation of new high-lift system variants in the future. The ability to evaluate such variants in an operational context also addresses the overall system capability.
